Counterfeit wine and spirits in Brazil: a real scourge that calls for strong answers
By Louis de Lambert · published on
As founder of FIDEwine, I have closely observed the scale of counterfeit wine and alcoholic beverages in Brazil, a market where this is not only an economic threat but also a major health risk.
📊 To date:
• 44,000 litres of counterfeit wine seized in 2025 during targeted operations by the Brazilian authorities.
• More than 10,000 litres of illegal wine confiscated from a clandestine factory in 2024, containing banned additives.
• 36% of alcoholic beverages sold in Brazil are adulterated, counterfeit or illegal, undermining consumer trust and the integrity of the market.
• The illegal market is worth around R$55 billion a year, with nearly 2 billion litres of illicit products sold.
💡 Thank you to Priscilla Hennekam, whose communication and awareness work is essential to shed light on this crisis and rally stakeholders around concrete action.
👉 As the Brazilian market opens up, it is absolutely key to deploy the best technology and traceability tools to secure the supply chain, protect consumers and strengthen trust in authentic wines.
At FIDEwine, we are ready to take on this challenge.
